The £9,000 heat pump grant for oil and LPG homes explained
If you heat your home with oil or LPG, you can now get £9,000 towards a heat pump through the government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme. That is £1,500 more than the standard grant, and it is aimed squarely at off grid homes like many across Warwickshire, Leicestershire and the wider Midlands. Here is who qualifies, why the timing matters, and how we handle the whole thing for you.
What is the £9,000 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a government grant that helps homeowners replace fossil fuel heating with a heat pump. For most homes it pays £7,500 towards an air source or ground source heat pump.
From 21 July 2026 the grant increased by 20 percent, from £7,500 to £9,000, for homes that are off the gas grid and currently heated by oil or LPG. The uplift runs until 31 March 2027 and applies across England and Wales.
If you are on mains gas the standard £7,500 grant still applies. The higher £9,000 amount is specifically for off grid oil and LPG properties, which is why it matters so much in rural parts of the Midlands where oil and LPG are common.
Who is eligible for the £9,000 grant?
To qualify for the full £9,000 you need to:
- Own the property, whether it is your home or one you let
- Be off the mains gas grid
- Currently heat your home with oil or LPG
- Have a valid Energy Performance Certificate
- Live in England or Wales
A few situations are not covered. New build properties and social housing do not qualify, and you cannot claim if you have already had government funding towards a heat pump. Replacing an existing low carbon system does not count either, as the grant exists to move homes off fossil fuel heating.

Why now matters if you heat with oil or LPG
Oil and LPG prices have been volatile, and unlike mains gas they are not protected by an energy price cap. When global prices spike, off grid households feel it first and hardest, with no cap to soften the blow.
Kerosene prices hit their highest level in years in 2026, which is part of the reason the government stepped in with the higher grant. A heat pump runs on electricity, and paired with the right tariff it gives you far more certainty over what you pay to stay warm. Switching is as much about getting off an unpredictable fuel as it is about lower carbon.

Is your home right for a heat pump?
Most homes are suitable, but a few things make a difference to how well a heat pump performs.
You will need space outside for the unit, roughly the footprint of a large appliance, with room around it to draw air. Inside you will usually need space for a hot water cylinder. Your radiators and insulation also play a part. Some older radiators may need upgrading to get the best efficiency, and better insulated homes cost less to run.
For a small number of hard to heat properties a hybrid system, pairing a heat pump with an existing boiler, can be worth considering. It is worth knowing that a hybrid set up can affect grant eligibility, so it is best to talk it through before deciding. Watch out for grant scams
Around 200,000 eligible households have been sent leaflets about the higher grant, and whenever a scheme like this launches, scammers follow.
A few simple rules keep you safe. Never deal with a cold caller. Check that anyone offering to arrange your grant can prove their credentials. Be wary of unexpected calls, texts or emails asking for personal or financial details. If you want to move ahead with the grant, come to a company you can call and speak to directly.
